I bought a property in Spain, do I have to become a resident now?

25 Sep 2022

We get this question often. Generally, the answer to this is no. If you only use your property for vacations, there is absolutely no need to register for residency in Spain. So, when is it necessary? If you spend 3 consecutive months in Spain you are considered a permanent resident and are therefore legally required to register as a resident of Spain. The next step is if you are in Spain for 6 months or more continuously, then you are even considered a tax resident. This means that you are then also legally obliged to pay taxes here in Spain. However, as long as you do not stay longer than 3 consecutive months in your home in Spain, but only a few weeks, there is nothing wrong and you do not have to become a resident!
